The Advantages of the Half Somersault Maneuver

The Half Somersault maneuver is designed to allow people to remove particles from the semicircular canals by themselves, without anyone else present to help. It is also designed to help prevent particles from falling into the horizontal canal after they have been removed from the posterior canal. Recall from Chapter 1, “An Introduction to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV),” that this is the major complication of other maneuvers. (I discuss this complication in more detail in Chapter 9, “Unusual Forms of BPPV”.) I devised the Half Somersault as an alternative to the other established maneuvers in an effort to specifically avoid that complication and therefore to create a maneuver that is safer to perform. The way the Half Somersault maneuver is carried out is also specifically designed to help the sufferer experience less severe vertigo during the maneuver than he or she would feel when doing the other common maneuvers. For this reason, the Half Somersault maneuver is easier to tolerate, and yet it still succeeds in moving the particles out of the posterior canal.2
